TPO's Desk: Success Tips for Job Aspirants!

Few tips I would like to share with students which may help the students to improve their employability.

  • Students should try to develop problem-solving skills.
  • Only theoretical knowledge is not enough; equal weightage should be given to practical knowledge; this shall help when you start working in an organization.
  • Participate, Compete: Students who regularly participate in technical quizzes and contests have higher chances of getting placed. Participation in such contests hones critical thinking, problem-solving and innovative skills, and thus they even have a tendency to perform well, at least during the initial stages of their career.
  • Effective communication skill is an important criterion in the selection process. It has been observed that lack of "effective" communication is one of the major reasons why even an engineer with strong technical competence may not be hired. So, the students must focus on developing effective communication skills.

The Training & Placement cell, too, should make an effort to bridge the gap between the industry and the students, so that the faculty and students become well aware of what the current industry demands from them. They (faculty and students), in this way, could train and learn as per the industry requirements.

Dr. A.K Mohapatra
In-charge Training & Placement, I.G.I.T, G.G.S.I.P.U

Lack of "effective" communication is one of the major reasons why a student, even with strong technical competency, may not be hired.

"In today's scenario of technical education, it is vital for every student to be equipped with technical and soft skills knowledge. I see a lot of students (especially engineering graduates) devoting most of their time these days to gain as much technical knowledge as they can. Well, that is good, but I believe by doing so, they are just creating a replica of their books or study material in their minds.

We all learn to display and to present. If we are not able to display the knowledge that we have then that knowledge becomes ineffective. If a student is not able to share his/her knowledge I consider him/her to be another book in front of me.

Thus, a vivacious personality with sound domain knowledge is what companies consider to be a perfect human resource for them - one who can share his/her knowledge to help the organization achieve its goal. For this to happen, it is very important that a student gives utmost importance to develop soft-skills which includes: communication, presentation, body language, attitude, behavior, etiquettes, group dynamics and team work."

Ms. Shefali Raj
Pranveer Singh Institute of Technology

We all learn to display our knowledge and if we are not able to do so then that knowledge is not effective.

It is a dream of every student joining Engineering Colleges to be able to work in an organization/company which promotes intellectual growth along with organizational growth.

To achieve this, students must work on:

  • Soft Skills with particular reference to communication skills
  • Technical competencies
  • Aptitude & Attitude
  • Out-of-the-box thinking
  • Good listening skills
  • How to become a good team player
  • Understanding Leadership traits
  • Flexibility in approach

All these must start from 3rd Semester onwards, particularly, Communication Skills. Other Soft Skills are acquirable over a period of time between 5th and 6th Semesters. By 6th semester, his/her Technical competencies come to fore. At this point of time, careful mentoring can help a person develop a well-rounded personality, transit from the college to the corporate world.

Brig. S.K. Kakar (Retd.)
Dean and Head - HR & Corporate Relations, Maharaja Agrasen Institute of Technology.

To achieve their goals, students must work on their communication skills, technical competencies, their aptitude and attitude, out-of-the-box thinking and understanding the leadership traits.
